What this tool answers
Photographers, designers, and print-on-demand sellers keep asking the same three questions: how big can this file go, how much will the lab crop, and is the file sharp enough at that size. A calculator can divide pixels by inches, but the useful answer also needs paper aspect ratio, orientation, viewing distance, and a preview of the pixels that will be cut away.
PrintFit fills that gap. The default example is a 24 megapixel 3:2 file (6000×4000), the most common still-camera resolution of the last decade. Replace it with your numbers or a photo.
How the numbers are produced
Effective DPI after a fill-crop is the cropped pixel width divided by the paper width in inches (and the same on the height; they match when the crop is exact). If you refuse to crop and instead fit the whole image on the sheet, DPI is usually a little higher and you get margins. Both figures are listed for the selected size.
Quality labels follow print-industry bands, not marketing copy: 300+ photo quality, 240 very good, 150 good for posters and many POD catalogs, 100 fair on a wall, 72 large-format, below that poor up close. The methodology page states the viewing-distance formula and its limits.
A worked example
Take 6000×4000 pixels. A 4×6 inch print is the same 3:2 shape, so nothing is cropped and the file is 1000 DPI — far above photo quality. An 8×10 is 4:5. After a centered crop you keep 3200×4000 pixels on 8×10 inches, which is 400 DPI: still excellent, but you lose the left and right edges. A 24×36 poster at 3:2 uses the whole frame at 167 DPI: good on a wall, not a handheld print.
Common mistakes
- Trusting the DPI tag in a JPEG header. That number is metadata. PrintFit uses pixel counts and the paper size you actually ordered.
- Upscaling in software and calling it 300 DPI. Extra pixels without detail do not create sharpness. The checker reports the file you have, not a fictional resample.
- Ordering 8×10 from a phone 4:3 still without checking the crop. Faces near the edge disappear.
- Applying the 300 DPI rule to a billboard. At ten feet, 20/20 vision resolves about 29 PPI.
When to use a different tool
If you already know the print size and need the pixel target, use pixels needed. If the question is only “how many inches is this at 300 DPI”, use pixels to print size. For apparel, mugs, and canvas, open the print-on-demand checker.

Questions people actually ask
- How many pixels do I need for an 8×10 print?
- At 300 DPI, 8×10 inches needs 2400×3000 pixels (7.2 megapixels) after cropping to 4:5. A 3:2 camera file will lose the long edges. Use the checker with your exact dimensions — the crop is often the limiting factor, not megapixels.
- Is 300 DPI always required?
- No. 300 DPI is a close-view photographic convention, not a law of physics. A 24×36 inch poster seen from four feet can look excellent near 150 DPI. The viewing-distance math is on the DPI page.
- Does PrintFit upload my photo?
- No. Pixel dimensions are read in your browser with the File API. The image is not sent to a server. You can also type width and height and never drop a file.
- Why does a 4×6 look fine but an 8×10 looks cropped?
- 4×6 is 3:2, the native shape of most cameras. 8×10 is 4:5. Labs crop the long side to fill the paper. The preview shows that crop before you pay for the print.
- Can I print a 12 MP phone photo as a poster?
- A typical 12 MP 4:3 still (4032×3024) is about 13×10 inches at 300 DPI, or 27×20 inches at 150 DPI. A 24×36 poster will be soft up close and acceptable on a wall. Check the poster row in the table.
